Best CAD CC for no FOREX fees & CB on high spend categories

For the longest time, I’ve had the PCF WE MC that isn’t really all that useful to me as most of my purchases are for dining out and groceries (getting back 1%) and I don’t shop at most of these loyalty stores anymore (Shoppers, Loblaws, No Frills, etc).
Anyone have recommendations as to the next best option for someone who already has a great AMEX Cobalt card (that’s barely accepted by any merchants) and would like a card to replace my PCF WE so I have a card that I can actually use when my AMEX isn’t accepted? FWIW, some merchants actually charge a fee to use AMEX... Looking for most, if not all, of the following features sorted by order of preference:
I feel like the Rogers WE, which has been SEVERELY devaluated, still satisfies what I’m looking for but would like to evaluate any other options.
🍻
P.S. Does anyone know if Visa or AMEX allows for gaming/casino purchases? I know MC works.

Rogeter WE MC questions. Have to pay $13000 CAD in Pesos this summer. Should I just pay it now to get the benefit of the % cashback?

As the title states, we are doing a destination wedding and are looking at $13,000 CAD which we will be charged in Mexican Pesos. I know that the WE card is changing to USD only for the 4% back fee.
  1. Does it make sense for me to pay it now to get the 4% back
  2. When does WE pay out their cash?
  3. Any other reccomendations?

EUR/USD forecast: bulls won’t let the euro burst

EUUSD forecast: bulls won’t let the euro burst

Fundamental Euro forecast for today

Which bubble is bigger? The stock or the Forex market?

Market bubbles suggest rapidly rising prices, which attract the buyer hoping to earn quick money. Such buyers do not express due diligence or worry about the long-term prospects of what they buy. They ignore standard gauges as irrelevant, and the bubble goes bigger through cheap money. It looks familiar, doesn’t it? The rallies of the US stock indexes and the EUUSD more and more look like a bubble. The bulls, however, do not let it burst.
It took S&P500 just 126 trading days to go back to February highs and hit a new record high. It is the fastest stocks rally after the bear market, which, by the way, had lasted for 33 days, with an average value of 302 of the previous 22 downtrends since the 1920s. Besides, the P/E of the stocks included in the index is 22.6. It is the highest value since the dot-com crisis. But the standard gauges are ignored in bubbles, aren’t they? The market is far from reality. The US economic state is hardly the same as it was in February.
The S&P500 rally has, for a long time, supported the EUUSD bulls, but, now, they have different drivers. The stock indexes are growing amid the Fed’s support, which the euro is strengthening because of the GDP growth gap between the euro-area and the US. Remarkably, the volatility of the equity market and the Forex are now diverging. The US stocks are growing because of the cheap liquidity; the currency market is currently pricing the risks of the possibilities of the COVID-19 second wave in the euro area, the presidential election in the US, and the escalation of trade wars.

Source: Bloomberg
The EUUSD rally may also look like a bubble. The net longs on the euro held by the asset managers are the highest ever. The euro-area economy was hit by the pandemic stronger than the US, and the yields on the European securities is still low. After all, everything is relative. While Steven Mnuchin claims that the negotiations between the Democrats and the republicans are stalled, the EU governments are quick to implement mitigation measures. The spread between US and German real yields is as narrow as it was in 2014 last time. The appeal of the US securities is falling, and that of the euro-area assets is growing. Isn’t it a reason to buy the euro?

Dynamics of the spread between US and German real yields

Source: Bloomberg
According to Scotiabank, speculative dollar shorts are not excessive; they haven’t reached the level of 2017. The market has just started shorting on the greenback, so there is room to open more shorts. Société Générale notes, the US dollar’s rate, in real terms, is still 25% higher than the levels of 2011, and the Fed is still willing to depreciate the dollar. Is the EUUSD a bubble? I do not think so. My strategy is to hold the euro longs and add up on the price falls. While the price is above 1.183, bulls control the market.

Ready to invest first time. Please correct my plan/strategy.

I have almost finished reading Millionaire Teacher, and am ready to invest. Will keep funds in for at least 10-15 years. I need to figure out my risk tolerance. I'm approaching age 40, thinking of keeping 35% bonds. At this point, I need to have my account on a brokerage ready ASAP as I learnt that it could take a few days to set up. For now, I am looking to purchase ETFs regularly. I'm looking at putting $100 per month. Hopefully cash flow will be disciplined enough to continue without breaks.
Currently, I have the following:

Please help me understand the following:
  1. How much cheaper is Norbert's Gambit than using a ForEx company to do a conversion from CAD to USD? I've never done either. I have done USD to CAD before, which basically takes 2-3 business days for the draft from the ForEx company to clear.
  2. I am considering either Questrade, TD Direct Investing or Scotia iTrade. Based on the reviews Questrade seems to be the best option. Which one would you recommended for a beginner like me? (Would be great feedback if you have used Questrade and TD/iTrade.)
  3. I mostly bank with Scotia. My investments will be 50K+ to start. Should I be considering iTrade over the other two for convenience? Or will the fees not make sense in my case?
  4. Is Norbert's Gambit possible to do with Scotiabank?
  5. Say I select Questrade, what is the most efficient (time/cost) process to move forward? Is the below correct?
    1. Transfer TFSA from Meridian to TD.
    2. Do Norbert's Gambit to convert to USD
    3. Transfer USD TFSA to Questrade.
    4. Transfer RRSP to TD
    5. Do Norbert's Gambit to covert to USD
    6. Transfer USD RRSP to Questrade.
  6. What steps above will incur least fees? I understand Questrade covers upto $150 transfer fee? But if I transfer my registered accounts to TD for Norbert's Gambit first, those fees won't be covered?
  7. Lastly, I'm not very knowledgable on RESPs. I understand gov't matches some part of the contribution? We have two kids, ages 10 and 8. No RESP yet. Can investments be made in RESPs? Any tips on this would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

What's the ideal banking setup for someone that travels out of Canada 80% of the year?

Hi, I work remotely and am only in Canada around Christmas for a month or so.
I currently just have a Tangerine account which works but the huge con is that the debit card is hardly accepted anywhere abroad (ATMs work but nothing else).
The ATM fees really add up as well.
The credit card is great, happy to keep that, but I would really like a debit card that I can use in stores abroad.
Is there another banking setup that would be most beneficial for someone like me? Maybe a credit card with better foreign exchange rates, debit card with lower withdrawal fees, etc?
Willing to pay if it is absolutely worth it, but I do love not paying for Tangerine right now.

Credit card questions

Have some questions, hope someone can help me through all of this.
Right now I have a basic no-fee TD Visa cash back card. I want to get a travel rewards credit card.
I've narrowed it down to the following cards:
TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite
RBC Avion Visa Infinite
CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite
American Express Cobalt
A big concern for me is having open and easy redemption as far as flight rewards go. I want any airline, no blackout periods, and no seat restrictions. That's why I want to avoid cards that use Aeroplan or other specific airlines.
I'm just confused when it comes to each bank's point system. They all have different ranges and values and it makes it hard to visualize which one has the best bang for your buck. Does anyone have any insight as to which one is preferable or offers the best basic benefits for travel?
For the RBC card, a big perk I like is saving 3 cents per litre on gas, and getting a little boost in points as well when you fill up at Petro.
My girlfriend uses the RBC Avion card and she seems to like it. If I were to get another bank's card and then we wanted to go on a trip together, wouldn't she want to use her card to book and I want to use my card to book? If we both were to use different travel portals to book a trip by redeeming points, how easy would it be for her to use RBC's redemption site and for me to use TD's (example) and pull up the same flight to book on? Are there big differences in what flights show up on different banks' travel portals?

How do I limit withdrawal costs and fees as much as possible while in Asia?

Country is Malaysia. Obviously taking money out of ATM every few days will cost a pretty penny in fees. I have a no fee Tangerine Mastercard and a no fee Desjardins Visa. Should I use chequing account? Pre paid credit card? Thanks

Rumour: 30,000 points WB offer for Scotia Gold Amex on August 1st

Rumour: 30,000 points WB offer for Scotia Gold Amex on August 1st
The new Scotia Gold American Express is coming in a few days, and the rumour is that there will be a new improved welcome bonus of 30,000 Scotia Reward points (worth $300).
It's also rumoured to have a totally new gold on black design, which if true would send this card from Ugliest Gold Card in Canada to one of the Top 5 imho.
TL;DR: You can apply now with the cheaper $99 AF, or gamble on a higher WB after August 1st when the AF goes to $120

https://www.lowestrates.ca/blog/finance/scotiabanks-gold-amex-card-just-got-bigger-intro-offer-and-amazing-perks
Things are know are gonna happen ( https://www.scotiabank.com/newgold ):
  • AF rises to $120 AF :(
  • Groceries, Dining and Entertainment go from 4x to 5x :)
  • Gas goes from 4x to 3x :(
  • "Streaming services" is a new thing at 3x :)
  • Public transit is also a new thing at 3x :)
  • No forex fee! But you only get 1x on any foreign purchases
  • $50k cap on bonus categories stays the same
  • Killed off Price Protection, nerfed some insurances :(
  • Still redeems at $1 = 100 points on portal or Pay Your Own Way :)

Annual fee waiver for Credit Card

Hi!!
I hope I'm posting in the right section.
i have 3 credit cards
American Express Cobalt(Primary card) BMO Cashback World Elite (Secondary card for places that don't take American Express) Scotiabank Passport Infinite Visa(I travel to US and Asia a lot so this card has been very helpful)
As you can see all 3 cards have hefty annual fees but all of them have been very useful for me like. BMO's roadside assistance has been a life saver for me on many occasions and I also shop a lot at Costco which only takes mastercard.
Cobalt has been my primary spending card and I've been racking up points on them very quickly as I dine out very often. I have already redeem 2 flight tickets to US.
Since I'm travelling a lot for work, my friend recommended the visa one and I found it extremely helpful with the 6 lounge passes and the no forex fee. I noticed from my statement this card actually gives me 2 points everytime I use it to eat out and taking a bus or taxi. I'm not sure if any other card provides this benefit
I have been with bmo since my student days. I do use their premium banking plan and therefore don't pay the annual fees if i maintain $6k balance. They even offered me a safety deposit box for free and am also planning on getting my mortgage with them in the future, since I have a very good relationship with them.
Yesterday I spoke to a rep about my concern and he suggested to degrade my banking plan to a lower one. The annual fees is only charged in May so two weeks before the May statement, I can upgrade it again to a premium plan and once the bill has been generated I can downgrade again. Many of his clients have successfully done this a few times and no questions have been asked. He suggested to try this with Scotiabank as well
I want to know if anyone else in same situation have done something like this? Do banks generally agree to this trick? I never knew this kind of trick even existed until yesterday.

Most accessible Canadian bank to use if wanting to travel internationally(Asia, South America, Europe, etc)? Looking for banks with a decent brick and mortar presence in other countries and wanting to find out which one might offer the lowest fees when it comes to sending/ receiving money online?

I don't own a credit card and would prefer not to get one, so I'm just trying to get an idea about which group of Canadian banks I should probably focus on before trying to narrow down my options depending on the specific country I will end up traveling to (and possibly moving to).
Could be Costa Rica, Ecuador, Thailand, Italy... still undecided for now.

My credit card plan

Hello! So during school I was lazy for the most part regarding my banking, and now that I've graduated and I have a real job I want to sort out my financials and make sure I am getting the most out of my spending. Currently I have 2 credit cards, an RBC Signature Rewards and Scotia's Scene CC with credit limits close to $10K each. I am planning to cancel my RBC rewards because I'm in the process of switching out to TD and I'm not going to pay the $40 annual fee to keep the card, and as for my Scene it gets me good points but I don't got to Cineplex often and they keep jacking up the Scene redemption rates.
My monthly expenses are roughly as follows:
This is what I plan to hold (upon approval of course):
Simplii Cash Back Visa - Use exclusively for 4% on restaurants (I'll have to open an account with them tho, which is fine because I can churn and get $200 for opening one)
Tangerine MC - 2% back on the recurring payments + maybe gas? (IF I get approved that is)
Rogers WE MasterCard - $0 annual fee, 1.75% on everything, 2% on my Fido bill (in case I can't get Tangerine), 4% on Forex when I travel and online purchases + WE benefits. I don't make $80K but I feel like my combined household limit is $150K but I need to double check this.
And my fallback option if I can't get the Rogers WE is to go for the SimplyCash and get 1.25% on the rest of my purchases. I saw somewhere that the Amex Cobalt was good but I got confused on how the redemption works and I don't think be positive enough over the $120 annual fee for it to be worth it. Also I was exploring the TD and Scotiabank offers and they didn't seem to entice me as much as the Rogers WE, and I can get TD's annual fee's waved because I can put $5K liquid as my emergency funds in a No Limit account and avoid banking/CC fees. I could do the same for Scotia with their new account, but I am wary of them because I've heard stories on here about them being poor to deal with.
Thanks for looking and I'll appreciate any advice on cards that I may have missed!

Rogers Mastercard dropping from 4% to 3% cashback on foreign transactions, best alternatives?

I've been holding off on deciding on a replacement for my Amazon.ca Chase card. Part of me was expecting that the day the card went defunct (yesterday), Amazon would announce a new partnership or maybe that they were planning on releasing a new card themselves. Wouldn't surprise me to see them make the move into banking.
Now that the doors have officially swung shut on any new charges, I was doing some research to see if anything has been announced or if any other new options have appeared, and came across these announced changes to the Rogers Platinum Mastercard, which had been the heir apparent for many people to replace the Amazon.ca card.
As far as I could tell, no one has posted about these changes yet. It appears that Rogers kept their old terms right up until the Amazon.ca card closed down, raking in the applications from people looking for an alternate foreign currency card, and then dropped their cashback by a full percent to take advantage of everyone now that they are one of the only games in town.
I already hated the idea of supporting Rogers by getting their card, so this puts the nail in the coffin for me on that front. I know about Home Trust, but they are inundated with applications and with a huge backlog. There's Brim, but they have not yet begun issuing cards and are an unknown and unproven. Scotia just announced a new Passport Visa with 0% forex fee on Monday, but it carries a very hefty $139 fee. Are there any other cards that have been announced or tweaked recently to be attractive to those of us who travel internationally?

Checking accounts with no Foreign Exchange Fees / International ATM withdrawl fees ?

Hey everyone... I'm leaving for Japan in March and will be there for about a year on a working holiday visa. (Potentially longer, depending on circumstances).
I plan on setting up a Japanese bank account once I've got my feet under me, have a long term address etc... but for the first couple of months I'll probably be relying on my existing accounts. (Doing the whole digital nomad thing so I'll be freelancing to support myself in addition to my savings).

I'm trying to minimize the foreign exchange fees / transaction fees as much as possible, but want to avoid carrying everything in cash for obvious reasons.

Done some research and gonna apply for a Scotiabank Passport Visa, which has an annual fee but has a bunch of perks for frequent flyers, and most importantly, charges no forex fee on transactions made abroad.
I suspect this will be fine and what I'll end up using for most of my purchases at first, but I'd still like to have a debit card I can use for ATM withdrawls, etransfers and deposits etc ... while I'm abroad. Lots of resources for US options but there doesn't seem to be much on Canadian ones? Even on infrequent withdrawls, the combination of the 2.5% - 3% forex fee plus ATM fees kill you.
Any suggestions?

"Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Discontinued"

http://pointshogger.boardingarea.com/chase-marriott-rewards-premier-visa-discontinued/
http://pointshogger.boardingarea.com/chase-marriott-discontinuation-confirmed/
Not sure why no one posted this when it occurred on September 5 or so.
Now, both Amazon and Marriott Visa's are not accepting applications. Likely just holding onto them because of their USA partnerships. Only reason I can think of why they don't discontinue them completely or sell them.

Best Canadian travel credit card?

Hi PFC, long time lurker with a small question.
I'm a canadian who studies in the us and I wanted to take advantage of possible travel rewards amd stuff as I was never into them but heard many people getting free flights after accumulating points and such.
Right now I have the Scotiabank Passport Visa which gives me no forex fees and some travel benefits like access to proority lounges. The annual fee is like $140 (I think).
What are some good travel rewards cards for someone you takes a us-canada flight around every two months? No forex fee would be a huge plus but I doubt there are many out there as I've looked briefly. Thanks guys!!!

Daily Driver: Cashback CC or Rewards/Travel CC ??

Currently own the following CC: BMO Cashback Mastercard (1% on all purchases) and Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite. Got the latter since we travel alot and wanted it primarily for 0% forex. With respect to "daily" benefits it's 2 Scotia Points for every $1 on groceries, dining, entertainment and transport (up to $50K in spending, after its 1 point/$1)
Right now we've been heavily using the Scotia CC to earn the 25K bonus points (after spending $1k)....However after this, I'm not sure if it'll be beneficial to continue to use the Scotia CC as opposed to the Cashback MC. Scotia CC doesn't cover the large spread of categories understandably, but I'm not sure if we should focus on building points (i.e. rewards) OR getting cashback.
Any thoughts? Rough estimates for expenses are $200 groceries, $160 bills, $200 dining $225 on transport.
TLDR: Cant decide if should focus efforts on cashback using BMO Cashback MC OR Scotia points with Scotia passport Visa.

Credit card plan suggestions?

I'm a 24 yo graduate working full time and getting paid decently (55k before tax). I currently have 2 credit cards to which I want to change since one is being closed and the other is, in my opinion, pretty useless. I prefer cards that don't require an annual fee and that offer cash-back rather than mile/points that cannot be converted to cash-back:
I would like to have a VISA as well but have yet to found one that catches my attention as much as the Amazon Visa
I would appreciate any advice people have

Scotia US$ CC?

So this card popped up on a website ad, and what caught my eye was the claim of no ForEx fees.
http://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/0,,8356,00.html
I am just wondering on how you would pay it without a US Balance account, and either way wouldn't there be fees involved with either converting for payment direct or moving funds into the US$ account?
Considering this for an online card now that the Amazon card is no longer available.

U.S. tax repatriation plan may not cure long-term dollar weakness

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 75%. (I'm a bot)
NEW YORK - Investors looking for the U.S. Republican tax bill to prompt multinational companies to convert foreign profits into dollars and end the worst slide in the greenback in a decade may have to temper their hopes for a prolonged rebound.
The bill President George W. Bush signed in October 2004 drastically reduced tax rates to 5.25 percent over a 12-month window and, along with aggressive tightening by the Federal Reserve, helped send the dollar nearly 13 percent higher the following year.
DOLLAR BULLISHNESS. Prospects of a tax break on companies' foreign earnings and expectations of wider U.S. budget deficits helped boost the dollar to its highest levels since 2002 soon after Trump's presidential victory in November 2016.
"Even a significant wave of repatriation might not lift the dollar directly, as some of the largest U.S. corporations already hold a lot of cash in dollar-denominated assets," said Shaun Osborne, chief FX strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto.
Despite some skepticism about U.S. repatriation flows, some analysts say the dollar could get a short-term boost.
He does not expect a dollar rally to continue beyond the second quarter of 2018, partly due to concerns about the tax plan's impact on the U.S. fiscal deficit.
